Lactose Intolerance and Flatulence
If you are “lactose intolerant” it means that you lack an enzyme “lactase” in your intestine. This enzyme breaks apart lactose into sugar molecules so they can enter the bloodstream. Without lactase the lactose passes the small intestine and is fermented by the colon bacteria and produces large amounts of carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Besides the excess gas, it may also cause abdominal cramps. The cure is to minimize milk and dairy intake to a level that the symptoms are controlled.
