Diabetes

November is Diabetes awareness month

There are an estimated 16 million diabetics in the United States, and that many have difficulty in coping with or controlling their diabetes.

Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease affecting every organ system. It accounts for $105 billion in annual U.S. health-care costs and 25% of all Medicare expenditures. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, adult blindness and non-traumatic amputations. People with diabetes are two to four times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke, and their life expectancy averages 15 fewer years than people without the disease. Insulin is not a cure, nor does it prevent the development of omplications.

Sorbitol, a sweetener found in sugarless gum, sweets, and diet drinks can cause excess flatus because it is not digested in the small intestine.

A diabetes drug called Precose, is safer than Metformin, but a major side effect is flatulence. Precose stops or delays the absorption of carbohydrates, so the sugars make it to the colon where they are fermented by the bacteria.

IT IS NOT SHAMEFUL TO BE DIABETIC. AGAIN, DON'T FEEL GUILTY IF YOU HAVE DIABETES OR HAVE EXPERIENCED ANY OF ITS COMPLICATIONS.
